NPB's Climax Series Explained: How Japan's Baseball Playoffs Work
Winning the pennant is not the end of Japan's baseball season. Each October, the top three teams in the Central and Pacific League enter the Climax Series, and the two survivors meet in the Nippon Series to decide Japan's champion. The format gives real, concrete advantages to finishing higher — which is exactly what the CS numbers on this site track all season.
Who gets in
The top three teams in each league qualify — six of NPB's twelve clubs. That is why the standings tables on this site draw a dashed line under third place: all season long, the practical fight for most teams is to stay above that line.
First Stage: 2nd vs 3rd
- Best-of-3, with every game at the second-place team's home park.
- No travel days; draws are simply counted as draws.
- If the series ends level (one win each plus a draw, or all draws), the higher-ranked team advances.
Finishing second instead of third therefore buys you home field for the whole stage and the right to advance on a split.
Final Stage: the pennant winner starts 1-0 up
- The First Stage winner meets the league champion — all games at the champion's park.
- Up to six games are played, and the champion begins with a one-win advantage.
- First side to reach four total wins (advantage included) takes the stage; if the series ends level on that count, the champion advances.
In effect the pennant winner needs three wins while the challenger needs four, all on the road. This is the concrete payoff of the pennant race — and why a team can care deeply about first place even after clinching a CS berth.
What the CS numbers on this site mean
For each team we compute the number of wins that guarantees a top-three finish no matter what other teams do ("3W to go"), flag teams whose berth is mathematically clinched, and mark teams whose CS hopes are gone. As with magic numbers, we do not apply tiebreaker rules — while identical winning percentages remain possible, we keep the race open rather than declare it early.
