How This Site Calculates Magic Numbers and Climax Series Scenarios

Data source and update schedule

• All records come from the standings and head-to-head results published on NPB's official website.
• We re-fetch the data roughly every six hours and rebuild each page automatically; every page states the "as of" date of the data it shows.
• If a fetch fails, pages keep serving the last successfully retrieved data rather than guessing.
• Once a day we also store a snapshot of ranks and games behind — that history powers the season charts on each team page.

How the magic numbers are computed

• A magic number is the number of wins that clinches the pennant regardless of every other team's results.
• The engine accounts for all remaining head-to-head games in the league: when two rivals play each other, one of them necessarily gains a win, and the worst case is computed with that constraint included.
• The possibility of drawn games is folded into the math, since draws change the winning-percentage denominator.
• Everything is computed in exact integer arithmetic — no floating-point comparisons, so no rounding-error verdicts.
• For teams whose number has not officially lit up, we show a "magic-equivalent" figure: how many wins would clinch the pennant regardless of other results. It is our own reference value, not an officially reported number.

How the Climax Series scenarios are computed

• A Climax Series berth means finishing in the league's top three.
• "Clinched" means no combination of remaining results can leave the team outside the top three on winning percentage.
• "Eliminated" means even winning every remaining game cannot lift the team into the top three.

What we deliberately do not do

NPB has tiebreaker rules for teams that finish with identical winning percentages: the Central League compares total wins first, then the head-to-head record; the Pacific League starts with head-to-head. We apply those two steps, comparing head-to-head records as they would stand if the team lost every remaining game against that rival. Ties that could still come down to the later criteria (intra-league record, previous season's finish) are treated as undecided — which means our "clinched" and "eliminated" labels can lag the official announcement, but will never jump ahead of it.

We also publish no probability forecasts. Every figure on this site is a mathematical certainty given the standings — counts of wins that guarantee or exclude an outcome — not a prediction.

How the engine is verified

• Automated tests check that in simple cases (no head-to-head games left, no draws) the engine reproduces the classic formula: 143 + 1 − your wins − the rival's losses.
• Textbook edge cases — head-to-head tugs of war, draws shrinking the percentage denominator — have their own test coverage.
• Real seasons still produce surprises, so every page carries its "as of" date and we always defer to official NPB announcements.

Why publish the methodology at all

Two sites can both say "3 more wins" and disagree, because the answer depends on premises: whether tiebreakers are applied, how draws are handled. Publishing our premises means that when our number differs from a news report, you can check why instead of guessing who is wrong.
